Parks and Playgrounds
The Municipality has the great fortune to be situated in one of the most beautiful, verdant corners of the South Shore. Our natural landscape is brimming with adventure waiting to happen. We have some public municipal gems just waiting for you to enjoy.
Anvil Park
Anvil Park in Chester Basin offers a peaceful green space in the heart of the community. With a history as the area's blacksmith shop, an informative monument, and the quiet solitude of the brook in the background, this is a wonderful place for a relaxing break.
Castle Rock
Hike, bike, and ATV to the heights of East River with panoramic views across all of Mahone Bay. A map is available by clicking here or dropping by the Recreation & Parks Department for a printed copy during business hours.
Croft Road Playground
(25 Croft Road, Chester Basin)
In 2004, the Municipality completed a total renovation of the Croft Road Playground in Chester Basin. It’s now a fantastic little playground and fenced in outdoor basketball/ground hockey court.
East River Property
The Municipality owns a nice little piece of property which hugs the banks of the East River. The land connects with Highway 3 to the south and crosses over the Rum Runners trail to the north making for a nice walking loop if you are brave enough to cross the brook.
Green Gym Park
Just on the other side of Croft Road from the playground is our outdoor fitness park. This park gives users a different experience of using exercise equipment outdoors. There are five different stations for a full body workout.
New Community Park in District 5
(6200 Hwy 3, Gold River)
The former Gold River Western Shore School site is being developed into a community park. The Municipality of Chester has entered into a long term lease agreement with the Together We Can Community Society who have come up with a design for the property. Over the next couple of years the group will implement the various phases of the plan and hope to have a fantastic green space for the community to enjoy. The existing children’s play equipment and upper field will continue to be available and new elements such as community gardens, walking paths and natural play area will be incorporated. For more information about the park, please contact Gina Green at 902-237-3149 or [email protected].
Trail System
Residents and visitors also have access to several trail systems throughout the Municipality. Click the box to the right to get information about the Rum Runners Trail (from Halifax to Lunenburg).
Village of Chester Gazebo
The gazebo at Parade Square, next to the Chester Yacht Club, is a popular place for weddings and summer music concerts. Call the Recreation & Parks Department to book the space for an event!
Wild Rose Park
Wild Rose Park is a prominent feature in the community of Western Shore. The views of Mahone Bay are breathtaking. The park is a perfect spot for a picnic lunch, a dip in the water or a place to sit and watch the many boats cruise the bay in the summer. There is also a small boat launch for your kayak or canoe. The Municipality of Chester took ownership of Wild Rose Park early in 2012.
