Non-Resident Taxes Proposed by Province

The Province of Nova Scotia has proposed implementing a non-resident Provincial property tax as well as a non-resident Provincial deed transfer tax. In response to concerns expressed by some of our residents in the Municipality of Chester (seasonal and permanent), as well as out of our own concerns, Municipal Council forwarded a letter to Premier Houston outlining their opposing position.

The letter outlines the many reasons that Council opposes the Province's initiative. While Council supports the goal of increasing available and affordable housing in the Province, they also believe that the proposed initiatives using non-resident tax revenue will not achieve that goal. Council is asking Premier Houston to reconsider in favour of a more collaborative solution. Click on the link to the right to read the letter.

The changes proposed by the Province are included in the Financial Measures Act, which was introduced in the Legislature on April 8.
